As of October 7, 2024, it has been one year since the onset of hostilities between the Israeli military and the Palestinian organization Hamas in Gaza. We express our profound concern over Israel’s ongoing military invasion and continued attacks on the Gaza Strip. These actions flagrantly violate international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter, posing severe threats to the lives and safety of innocent civilians, particularly women and children.
The cycle of violence, which undermines the long-standing international efforts for a peaceful resolution, must be brought to an immediate halt. We urge the international community and the Japanese government to take decisive action on the following points:
Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Assistance
We call for an immediate cessation of attacks on Gaza and the establishment of secure pathways for humanitarian aid. It is imperative to ensure an environment where international relief organizations can operate freely.
Compliance with International Law
We demand adherence to Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force, as well as the Geneva Conventions, which obligate the protection of civilians. Attacks on non-combatants must cease immediately.
Achieving Sustainable Peace
Efforts to respect the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and to end the occupation must be advanced through comprehensive peace processes supported by the international community.
Role of Japanese government
We urge the Japanese government to expand its humanitarian assistance to address the crisis in Gaza and to exert diplomatic pressure on both Israel and Palestine to pursue a peaceful resolution.
We appeal strongly to civil society and the international community to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated. Furthermore, we commit to supporting movements aimed at realizing a just and sustainable peace.
